Target audience
Researchers involved with investigations into the use of the interactive whiteboard in mathematics classrooms.
The aim is to extend an established informal research network started by members of six UK institutions working in the area of interactive whiteboard research. This group, which has been meeting for over 3 years, includes members who are looking into interactive whiteboard use by pupils and students of all ages and in all subjects. The group has already extended its network to include researchers working in Australia and Singapore and is about to approach researchers from Brazil, Mexico and South Africa to join.
We see this SEG as an opportunity to extend this network.
Session 1
The first half of this session will provide an international overview of research into the use of the interactive whiteboard in the mathematics classroom and will be based upon the work completed by members of the network and informed by other relevant research of which we are aware.
The second part of this session will allow others to provide us with a brief abstract of other work of their own or others that has not already been listed.
Session 2
In the second session we will look to future development and research opportunities that would allow researchers with different experiences to plan and develop their theoretical and practical perspectives.
We believe that this is particularly important since we expect interactive whiteboard technology use internationally to expand in the future, so it is important that research and evaluation should support and help inform policy.
Gains for participants
- Up-to-date information on interactive whiteboard research
- Opportunity to work and discuss similar work with others
- Future networking opportunities
- Membership of an established and expanding community of researchers
Outcomes
Following this we would hope that participants would
• arrange to meet at other conferences (informally or formally) such as:
- ICME-12
- Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education
British Educational Research Association
Asian Technology Conference in Mathematics
American Educational Research Association
• keep in contact through the email network (now in its third year)
• contribute to www.iwbmaths.co.uk/research following the sessions
• plan research with other members of the group
• collaborate over research and articles
Further information and participation
The overview of relevant work will be made available at about one month before ICME at
www.iwbmaths.co.uk/research
and the site will be in place with some material from 1 March 2008.
We would hope that anyone interested in participating would contact us either through the email address given above or through the website. We expect to limit the group size to 25 members.
