"Developing Preservice Elementary Teachers' Mathematical Power" is designed for university mathematics educators who are interested in empowering preservice, elementary teachers by helping them to deepen their knowledge of elementary school mathematics, develop their sense of their ability to do mathematics, and increase their skills to communicate mathematics. The presenter will share strategies that she has been implementing in her courses, results of preliminary research on how students' mathematical power develops over the course of one semester, and ongoing work to examine the development of mathematical power across a series of three math content courses specifically designed for future elementary teachers. The 12-18 participants for this session can expect to:
1. be reminded about calls to reform undergraduate mathematics teacher preparation programs to ensure that teachers can meet standards for K-12 mathematics education
2. hear about challenges faced when working with this population as related to mathematical skills and attitudes and beliefs about the teaching and learning of elementary mathematics
3. hear about preliminary research and specific examples of activities that promote the development of mathematical power
4. share some things that they are doing (or would like to try) in their classes to develop the mathematical power of their students
